Here we explore transformational coaching skills for leaders to empower teams and organizations. By fostering deeper conversations and helping individuals tap into their unique gifts – leaders can enable a dynamic, creative, inclusive and forward-thinking, workplace environment that benefits everyone.

Explore, not explain.

When coaching, focus on exploration rather than explanation. Embracing a “Yes, and” approach keeps dialogue open and expansive, allowing space for possibilities and creativity. Effective leadership coaching hinges on core skills that can be developed with practice:

Deep Probing Questions: Encourage thoughtful reflection.

Articulating Observations: Willingness to articulate what is being noticed without being attached to meaning.

Silence: Use pauses to let ideas develop.

Curiosity: Maintain an open and inquisitive mindset.

Accountability: Hold both yourself and the coachee responsible.

Intuition: Trust your instincts to guide the conversation.

Appropriate Intervention: Step in when necessary, but do so with sensitivity.

Listening: Master the art of active listening—

99% of coaching is truly great listening.

These are skills that can be honed through practice and unlearning old habits. They require agility and flexibility. Offering solutions isn’t always the best approach – sometimes, a coachee simply needs a sounding board to work through their ideas. By empowering them to solve their own problems, you give them the agency they need to grow.

Don’t “do” coaching, just be a coach.
Guide them to what they already know how to do.

Remember, the client should be doing most of the talking. Reflect on why you’re speaking and how it benefits the conversation. When leaders are skilled coaches, they foster high-performing teams, positively impacting every aspect of the organization. Meeting teams where they are and helping them see different perspectives can drive significant organizational growth and success.
