One of the key things that organizations and leaders can do is lead to their core values, mission, and vision.
In this post-pandemic world, we’re noticing a lot of times when organizations have hybrid teams or remote employees, that is what is getting lost. So our goal is to bring the core values of the organization to the forefront of leadership and helping the teams make sure that they are fully aware of the values.
Before we start looking at values themselves, let’s do a quick check-in on what we mean by Mission, Vision and Values.
Mission, vision, and values are interconnected elements that collectively define the identity, direction, and principles of an organization. While they serve distinct purposes, they are interrelated and contribute to shaping the culture, strategy, and decision-making within the organization.
- Mission:
- The mission statement articulates the fundamental purpose or reason for an organization’s existence.
- It describes what the organization does, who it serves, and the primary outcomes or impact it seeks to achieve.
- The mission statement provides a clear focus and direction for the organization’s activities and guides decision-making and resource allocation.
- Example: Team KatAnu Mission ” To empower individuals and organizations worldwide through dynamic collaboration, innovative training, and expert coaching in Scrum, Leadership, and Facilitation, fostering agility, innovation, and adaptability.”
- Vision:
- The vision statement outlines the desired future state or aspirational goal that the organization strives to achieve.
- It reflects the organization’s long-term objectives, aspirations, and desired impact on the world.
- The vision statement inspires and motivates team members, customers, and stakeholders by painting a compelling picture of the organization’s future success.
- Example: Team KatAnu Vision “To be the leading force in transforming organizational cultures by championing agile leadership principles, encouraging continuous improvement, and cultivating empowered teams that thrive in rapidly changing environments. Through engaging and enjoyable learning and coaching experiences, we inspire individuals at all levels to embrace agility, make swift and customer-centric decisions, and achieve sustainable success in their endeavors.
- Values:
- Values represent the core principles, beliefs, and ethical standards that guide behavior and decision-making within the organization.
- They define the organization’s culture and shape its identity, influencing how employees interact with each other, stakeholders, and the broader community.
- Values serve as a moral compass, helping to prioritize actions and align behaviors with the organization’s mission and vision.

What happens if your organization lacks a mission, vision, or values?
If your organization lacks a mission, vision, or values, it can face several challenges and drawbacks:
- Lack of Direction: Without a clear mission or vision, employees may feel directionless and uncertain about the organization’s purpose and long-term goals. This can lead to confusion, disengagement, and a lack of alignment in efforts.
- Difficulty Prioritizing: A clear mission and vision help guide decision-making and prioritize efforts within the organization. Without these guiding principles, it can be challenging to determine what initiatives to focus on and how to allocate resources effectively.
- Weak Organizational Culture: Values play a crucial role in shaping the organizational culture and defining acceptable behaviors and norms. Without defined values, the organization may struggle to establish a positive and cohesive culture, leading to conflicts, inconsistency, and low morale.
- Limited Stakeholder Engagement: A compelling mission and vision can attract and engage stakeholders, including employees, customers, investors, and partners. Without these foundational elements, it may be difficult to inspire and retain the support of key stakeholders.
- Risk of Drifting: Without a clear sense of purpose and values, organizations risk drifting aimlessly or being influenced by short-term goals or external pressures. This can hinder long-term sustainability and resilience in the face of challenges.
- Difficulty Differentiating: A strong mission, vision, and values can differentiate an organization from its competitors and attract customers who resonate with its purpose and principles. Without these distinguishing factors, the organization may struggle to stand out in the market.
To address these challenges, it’s essential for the organization’s leadership to prioritize the development of a meaningful mission, vision, and values. This process involves engaging stakeholders, defining the organization’s purpose and aspirations, and articulating core principles that guide decision-making and behavior at all levels.
